Today was different than I expected.

A week ago I had a Thursday visit with a Kaiser doctor since my doctor was too swamped.  He was very careful and not only dealt with my influenza he also heard me say that I'd been having headaches since I fell at the gym during a session.  He ordered a CT scan for the next day, so in the afternoon I went, found a healthy co pay of two hundred 15 dollars.  Later that day, a week ago on Friday he called to say I needed to go to ER because the CT scan had discovered a brain bleed.  So later that night I went to ER and ended up being admitted to the hospital and after everyone looked over the CT they decided it was nothing, told me to go home and resume my blood thinner which I did this past week but the headaches persisted and while I was recovering from the flu I didn't feel totally right.  They had required a follow up CT scan for this morning, a week later.  So at 8:45 I was at Kaiser for CT scan, a little later I had the scan and the lady was not comfortable with what she say, she say a new bleed in the brain and thought I should cancel my day of 4 appointments and go to ER for followup.  I walked out and started driving but grew more and more apprehensive about turning my back on care so I went back and was greeted with open arms.  Very soon I was in a bed, my appointments cancelled or put off for the day and they started work.  They discovered my INR was 4.4, a very thin blood, in 15 years I had never been more than 3.1 and normally I kept it between 2 and 3 taking blood thinner faithfully every night.  But somehow this week the blood had gotten much thinner, 4.4 and as a result the brain had started to bleed.  So they immediately gave me Vitamin K in two different forms, within an hour they had my blood to a 1.1 level, that is totally normal for a person not taking thinner at all.  Then this afternoon they did another CT scan and there was no change in the bleed, no worse, no better.  The doctors considered that success since it was not worse and after feeding me a great dinner released me to drive home.
Now I'm ready to go to sleep and for the next month I'll have no blood thinner or aspirin, for the first time in years I'll not have thin blood to ward off possible stroke.  But the thinking is, its better to let the blood do its work in healing my brain from bleeds.
I received great care from the local Kaiser ER today, really amazingly good.  I've very thankful that the super thin blood was discovered.  That was a huge risk I did not even know about.
In doing research the medical staff thought it might have happened because the doctor had given me Theraflu and an antibiotic also to help me beat back the flu.  Perhaps the Flu medicine and the antibiotic together could have caused the thin blood, no one really knows why.
Sending love to all, Nikki, Jason and my partner in Singapore Moon all were very supportive today and I felt cared for.
Now I sleep and I'm so glad to be home in my own bed.
Sending love to all,
Tim
